Electricity end-use at european level

Electricity use grows at almost the same rate as the economy. According to a European survey a significant portion of household electricity consumption, equivalent to 22%, is for electrical heating systems use, 15% for refrigerator-freezer, 12% for miscellaneous and 12% for lighting.

With EU national representatives decision to phase out incandescent light bulbs and inefficient halogen bulbs between 2009 and 2012, the Commission estimates that it will allow EU households to reduce their electricity use by 10-15%, saving up to 50 euro a year.

A range of policies at a Euopean level are in place to improve the energy and environmental performance of products: Ecodesign (EuP) Directive (Directive 2005/32/EC ) establishes a framework for setting ecodesign requirements for energy-using products; the labelling schemes set by the Energy Labelling Directive (Directive 92/75/EEC), the Energy Star Regulation (Regulation EC N° 106/2008) and the Ecolabel Regulation.

The radio campaign will provide consumers with practical information on energy efficient domestic appliances and use, local economic measures and policies and efficient lighting systems.
