Smart Vehicles at european level
Green House Gas emissions from the transport sector are rising steadily, caused by the continuing growth of transport volume. More than 90% of the total of these emissions are due to road transport.
The efficiency improvements in passenger cars have not been sufficient to counteract this trend on climate change: from 1990 to 2007 in Europe (EU-27) the annual CO2-equivalent emissions by cars has been grown by 43,2 million tons. In 2003, owing to the urgency of these problems, mandatory biofuel quotas have been introduced in the Biofuels Directive: replacing 2% of vehicle fuel supply by 2005 and 5,75 % by 2010. In 2007 the EU target for biofuels was than increased to an ambitious 10% level by 2020. Unfortunately, according to the EEA Scientific Committee, this last target is an experiment whose unintended effects are difficult to predict and control.
One of the most effective answers to reduce cars’ problems can be to focus on our own life styles, aiming to reach fuel savings and CO2 emissions´ cutting.
The radio campaign will talk about more efficient vehicles and give advices on smart driving and a correct car’s maintainance (good behaviours can cut consumptions and Green House Gas emissions by 10-15%).
